East Lake: A Historic Neighborhood Reimagined
Nestled just 4.5 miles from downtown Atlanta, the historic neighborhood of East Lake exudes a timeless charm that has captivated residents and visitors alike for generations. With its picturesque streets lined with bungalows and cottages dating back to the early 20th century, East Lake offers a unique blend of history, community, and modern amenities.
Historical Roots:
The story of East Lake begins with its origins as part of a 19th-century plantation owned by Lt. Col. Robert Augustus Alston. The plantation's legacy lives on in landmarks like Meadow Nook, an antebellum home built in 1856. Despite the upheavals of the Civil War, Meadow Nook remained intact, a testament to the resilience of East Lake's heritage.
In the late 19th century, the East Lake Land Company embarked on a development project, dividing the land into lots and attracting Atlantans seeking refuge from the city's hustle and bustle. The establishment of the Atlanta Athletic Club , by Burton Smith, and 65 of his friends and friends of friends formed in 1898. The original clubhouse was located on Edgewood Avenue, just below the Equitable building.
The club initially had no golf course, but four years after it was founded, it had grown to more than 700 members. And John Heisman, the Georgia Tech football coach for whom the famed Heisman Trophy was later named, directed the club’s athletic program of swimming, tennis, basketball and track.
With golf becoming more popular, the Club purchased a 178 acre tract of land in nearby DeKalb County, which was the site of former amusement park. In 1904, the Club broke ground on the first golf course at the newly formed “East Lake Country Club”. The golf course architect was Tom Bendelow.
Resurgence and Revitalization:
Despite facing challenges such as the decline associated with the East Lake Meadows housing project in the 1970s, East Lake experienced a remarkable revival in the late 20th century. Led by community activists and driven by private initiatives like the Villages of East Lake, the neighborhood underwent a renaissance, attracting a new wave of residents eager to embrace its historic character.
Today, East Lake stands as a testament to the power of community resilience and reinvention. Its tree-lined streets are adorned with charming bungalows and cottages, lovingly restored to their former glory, while modern amenities and green spaces like East Lake Park offer residents a vibrant lifestyle amidst a historic backdrop.
Future Development Plans:
Looking ahead, East Lake continues to evolve, with plans for further development aimed at enhancing the neighborhood's appeal and livability. Initiatives like the East Lake Farmers Market promote community engagement and healthy living, while ongoing efforts to renovate and restore East Lake Park ensure that residents have access to quality recreational facilities.
